Revision (reoperation) of total hip endosprothesis

All hip endoprostheses have their lifetime. The average duration is 15 years. Parts of the prostheses "loosen” after some time, i.e. it comes to small shifts of the cup or the stem in their bone bed causing pain during movement that can increase over time. Besides loosening up, after a specific number of years, the material of plastic (polyethylene) cups wears away, and consequently it leads to an incorrect bone strain.

For these reasons, it is necessary to have an orthopaedic examination and make an X-ray of the operated hip once a year.

In the case of loosening, the patient is subjected to reoperation by replacing the instable part with the new one. The number of total endoprosthesis increases and so does the number of reoperations. Nowadays, it is a standard procedure both in our institution and worldwide.
